Tips and Tricks for getting the perfect vacation property experience:

Getting the most from your spending budget:

  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is high season in the New Bern area. To get the best value, change your vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Owners sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer their guests an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply New Bern area visitors guide magazines that include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find New Bern visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Planning and picking a perfect New Bern rental:

  • Select a designated group leader, choose your trip dates, and select a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Ocean front 6BR with pool & hot tub has 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property owner before you reserve the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to work out what is optimal for your group.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or charges could be applied to your contract.
  • Are you visiting for a specific attraction or event? Use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Add the host's information to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Lock your vacation home while you are out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
  • To make certain damages are not attributed to your visit, make a record of any problem areas upon your arrival. Contact the host immediately to relay any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers disrupting your peaceful home life. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected all personal items. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental a final time and scan for damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a fantastic vacation? Most rental websites make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
