Tricks and tips to get the optimal rental home experience:
When to book & When to go:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are high season in Beaufort. Booking a rental in Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
- Owners sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
- Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply New Bern area visitor guides which often include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find New Bern area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Choose your dates and max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Blue Heron in the heart of Beaufort, it is a 5 star home! has 6 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available on booking websites. If not, email or call the property management company before you reserve your rental. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what is suitable for your vacation.
- Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or could be applied to your contract.
- Does your group require specific amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
More tips for your stay:
- Be sure you get the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, intercom or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent quite a few issues.
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are away, just like you would at home.
- Upon arrival, document any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Be a good neighbor. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can usually help. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to make sure you did not forget any personal items. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager is not available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a fantastic time? Most rental websites make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
