Tips for getting the best New Bern vacation home experience:

Sticking to a spending budget:

  • Summertime is the most expensive season in Emerald Isle. To book the largest rental home within budget, we recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Look for your local New Bern area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great information, visitors guides contain offers and deals for nearby tours and attractions.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Start by having your group choose dates and a maximum budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Second row, ocean view duplex w/ easy beach access has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is usually available online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the host before you reserve the rental. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Visiting for a single event or attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but others do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the property management company about pets before booking.

Know before you go:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property. Store the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • To make sure damages aren't linked to your stay, note any problem areas when you arrive. Call the host immediately to relay any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be helpful.
  • Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are an excellent resource to find the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Upon check-out, complete a walk-through to confirm you have not leave anything behind. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Hosts rely on excellent feedback to compel future reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
