Tips and Tricks to get the optimal New Bern vacation home experience:

Cost saving strategies:

  • Summer months are high season in the New Bern area. To get the best value, try changing your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warm weather, , and greatly reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a New Bern vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some owners offer promotional rates for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Property managers often offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply New Bern area visitor guide magazines which will include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find New Bern area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Choose vacation week and max budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. 3 NIGHT MINIMUM SUMMER SPECIAL!!! GREAT FOR GUEST WHO CAN'T STAY A WEEK!!! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our New Bern vacation rental search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available on booking pages. Otherwise, contact the host before you book the rental. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to establish what configuration is right for your vacation.
  • Is your family looking for particular amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all required amenities are included before booking
  • Some properties allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the host about allowable breeds and types before booking.

More considerations:

  • Add the host's contact information to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • During check-in, document any issues with the property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be respectful. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Re-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed everything on check-out day. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and look for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take video of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a fantastic vacation? Many rental managers make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
