Strategies for getting the best New Bern vacation home experience:

Find your perfect rental:

  • In the New Bern area, The sooner your group can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are reserved early. Reserving your vacation home up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your rental.
  • Reserving a rental home in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is a great way to save on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guides have coupons for local shops and restaurants.

Choosing the best rental:

  • Select your vacation week and budget.
  • Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Oceanfront, Poolside, Summerwinds, ton of amenities has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is normally accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property manager before reserving the vacation property. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the owner about allowable breeds and types before booking.
  • Are you looking for specific amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

More considerations:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and save the directions to your phone.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Lock your rental while you're out and about. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
  • During arrival, make note of any issues with the property and immediately alert the owner. Record all coorespondence.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Just prior to departing, complete a walk-through to confirm you have not forget anything. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a fantastic time? Most rental managers make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
