Strategies to get the optimal vacation rental experience:

Get the most from your rental budget:

  • Booking your vacation rental in Fall or Spring months is a good way to save on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • In the New Bern area, The earlier your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental homes are booked early. Booking your vacation property six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your rental.
  • Hosts sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your family.
  • Booking websites typically offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines contain discounts for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Finding the perfect vacation home in the New Bern area:

  • First and foremost, have your family commit to a vacation week and a spending budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Coral Shores #22, Oceanfront Condo in Pine Knoll Shores, NC! has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available online. If they are not listed, email the host before booking the property. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what bed configuration is suitable for your trip.
  • If there's an individual New Bern beach you crave, look for rentals that are either close by, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. .
  • Some rentals allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the property management company about allowable breeds and types before booking.

Advice for a wonderful stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Save the instructions to your phone, and take a printed copy.
  • To make sure no damages are linked to your family's stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas upon check in. E-mail the property manager right away to relay any issues. If there is a dispute, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, A/V setup or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents lots of issues.
  • Be respectful. Often, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you are gone! Don't let burglars spoil your holiday.
  • At departure, complete a walk-through to confirm you didn't forget anything. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, remember to take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a wonderful stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
