Strategies to get the very best vacation home experience:

Sticking to your rental home budget:

  • Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are high season in the New Bern area. Reserve your rental in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
  • Some hosts offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local New Bern visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guides have discounts for local shops and restaurants.

Narrow your Search:

  • First and foremost, have your family commit to dates and a budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Pebble Beach A305, 3BR Condo ~ OCEAN FRONT! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available on booking websites. Otherwise, contact the host before booking your home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to work out what is optimal for your vacation.
  • If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to find a rental that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Usually, property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Is your group looking for unique amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

Advice for a wonderful stay:

  • Add the host's phone number to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many concerns.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Document any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if a dispute is filed.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Hosts rely on excellent ratings to stimulate new bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
