Vacation rental tips:

Finding your perfect rental home:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is high season in the New Bern area. To find the largest rental home within your budget, we highly recommend booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at popular New Bern attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Property managers frequently offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Find a copy of your local New Bern visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guides contain money saving offers on local accommodations and attractions.

Make a plan and choose yourrental:

  • First, have your group select the best dates and a budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration you need. Tryon Palace, Neuse River, Birthplace of Pepsi has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our New Bern rental home search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is usually accessible on booking pages. If not, email or call the property manager before booking the vacation property. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or might be applied to your contract.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction or event? Try a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

More considerations:

  • Put the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents quite a few concerns.
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are away, just like you would back home.
  • Make a record of any damages to the property during check in, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute is filed.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors disrupting your peace. Practice the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would've not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • At departure, complete a walk-through to make sure you did not leave anything behind. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Please make sure to walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to compel new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
