Strategies for getting the best vacation property experience:
How to get the best rental home value:
- Summer months are the most expensive season along the coast of NC. Reserve your rental home in Fall or Spring to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Some hosts and property managers offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Look for your local New Bern visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines contain deals for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.
Finding the perfect rental home:
- Choose your vacation week and max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Islands and Inlets - the best views on the Crystal Coast! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is usually accessible on booking websites. If not, call the property owner before booking your home. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to establish what is optimal for your vacation group.
- Are you looking for unique amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental
- Some rental properties allow pets, and others don't. Allowable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
Advice for a great stay:
- Add the owner's information to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Record any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if damages are assessed.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents a lot of concerns.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers disrupting your peace. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would have never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Re-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items at check-out. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photographs of the property to record its condition.
- After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on great feedback to drive more reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your experience find their best rental home. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
