Vacation rental home tips and tricks:

Get the best value:

  • In the New Bern area, The earlier your group can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best properties are reserved early. Booking your vacation rental 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. Reserve your New Bern vacation in Fall or Spring months to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group.
  • Property managers frequently offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
  • Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply New Bern area visitor guide magazines which include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Planning and choosing the perfect New Bern rental home:

  • First and foremost, have your family select trip dates and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Fun in the sun only steps from your door! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is often available on booking pages. If they are not listed, reach out to the property owner before booking your home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional pet fees or costs might be applied to your contract.
  • Does your group require unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking

Additional considerations:

  • Add the owner's contact info to your phone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • To ensure that damages are not linked to your family's visit, inspect the property for any problem areas during arrival. E-mail the host immediately to relay your findings. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors disrupting your peace and quiet. Practice the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Re-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your family have a wonderful time? Many rental managers make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property manager was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
