Strategies to get the perfect vacation rental experience:
Find your perfect rental:
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Booking a rental in the Spring or Fall is an excellent way to save on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Property management companies typically offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
- Look for your local New Bern area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great information, travel guide magazines contain offers and deals for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Finding the perfect rental:
- Choose vacation week and max budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. Fanta Sea, Oceanside House in Emerald Isle, NC! has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed types is usually accessible on booking pages. If not, contact the property management company before you book the property. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to work out what is right for your trip.
- Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or could be applied to your contract.
- If there's a particular New Bern beach you are crazy about, look for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
More considerations for your visit:
- Get the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are away, just like you would back home.
- To ensure that no damages are linked to your stay, make a record of any problem areas during check in. E-mail the rental manager right away to relay any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be helpful.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers bothering your quiet neighborhood. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and attractions you would have not otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Double-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the property a final time and scan for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the host is not available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition.
- Did your group have a great vacation? Most rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
