Strategies for getting the best Emerald Isle rental home experience:

Getting the most from your budget:

  • In the New Bern area, The sooner your group can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental homes are booked very early. Booking your rental home up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental.
  • June, July, and August are high season in the New Bern area. To find the best value, change your family's New Bern vacation to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer great temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a New Bern vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Booking websites typically offer guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Look for your local New Bern area magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, visitor guides contain discounts for local tours, shops, and attractions.

Filter your rental search:

  • To start, have your family commit to date ranges and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. 4BR duplex close to town and ocean front! has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is usually available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, call the property manager before reserving the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches. You'll need to establish what bed configuration is right for your vacation group.
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, filter your search for a pet-friendly rental. Request details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property managers charge additional pet fees.
  • Is your group looking for particular amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking.

Have a fantastic stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, elevator or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent lots of difficulties.
  • Keep your rental home locked while you're away! Don't let burglars ruin your holiday.
  • Make a record of any issues with the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are valuable if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors disrupting your home life. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often help. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Re-check every room of the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items at check-out. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property a final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a terrific time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
