How to get the best rental experience:

Sticking to a budget:

  • Summer is the most expensive season in coastal NC. To find the largest rental home within your budget, we suggest booking in Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at New Bern restaurants, beaches, and activities.
  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your group qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Booking websites usually offer their guests an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Look for your local New Bern visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guides have coupons for local shops and restaurants.

Planning and choosing the best New Bern rental home:

  • Select a group leader, choose your trip dates, and choose a max budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration your family requires. Queen Suite-Unit 109 has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our New Bern rentals search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is generally available online. If not, call the property management company before reserving the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds. You will need to establish what bed configuration is suitable for your vacation group.
  • Does your family require specific amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to search for a property that allows animals. Get information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Usually, hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.

During your stay:

  • Add the owner's phone number to your phone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • To make sure damages aren't attributed to your visit, note any problem areas when you arrive. Speak to the host immediately to relay your findings. If there is a dispute, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many issues.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at departure. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, remember to take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a terrific time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your property and/or host was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
