Vacation rental tips and tricks:
Getting the most from your rental home budget:
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- To find the largest rental home within your budget, we recommend reserving in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a New Bern vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your family qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Booking websites usually offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guides have coupons for nearby shops and restaurants.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Start by choosing your potential vacation weeks and a max budget.
- Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Dark and Stormy, Almost Oceanfront House in Emerald Isle, NC! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our New Bern rental home search.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking websites. If not, contact the property owner before booking the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- Some properties allow pets, but others do not. Acceptable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask your host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
- Visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
Have a wonderful stay:
- Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your . We recommend storing the manager's information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, television set or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent lots of problems.
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are away, just like you would at home.
- Upon arrival, record any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the host. Record all coorespondence.
- Respect the neighborhood. Frequently, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Re-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings at departure. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did you have a wonderful vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
