Tips to get the optimal vacation rental experience:

When to visit New Bern & When to book:

  • Summer months are the most expensive season in coastal NC. Reserve your rental property in Fall or Spring to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • The sooner you can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best rental homes are reserved very early. Booking your vacation rental 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation home.
  • Some owners offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local New Bern visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guides have money saving offers on local accommodations, restaurants and tours.

How to select the perfect rental in the New Bern area:

  • First and foremost, have your family agree to a vacation week and a maximum budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. Conveniently Located 3 Bedroom 2 Bathroom has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available online. Otherwise, email or call the property owner before reserving the property. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • If there's an individual New Bern destination you simply love, search for homes that are either near by, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Remember to include your furry companions! Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or might be applied to your agreement.

Have a great stay:

  • Be sure you get the host's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. Put the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • Document any issues with the property during check in, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be useful if a dispute is filed.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, stereo or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent lots of concerns.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to confirm you have not leave anything behind. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, take pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a fantastic time? Many rental managers make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
