Strategies for getting the best vacation home experience:
When to go & When to book:
- Book your rental in the Spring or Fall to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a New Bern vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Some hosts and property managers offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
- Booking websites often offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
- Find a copy of your local New Bern visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, visitor guide magazines have coupons for local tours, shops, and attractions.
Finding the best rental:
- Select a group leader, select your vacation dates, and choose a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Better Daze, Oceanfront House in Emerald Isle, NC! has 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is commonly accessible online. Otherwise, call the property owner before you book your rental. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Does your group require particular amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.
- Remember to include your furry companions! Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or costs may be applied to your contract.
More considerations:
- Add the host's phone number to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Document any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are valuable if there is a dispute.
- Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home while you are out, just like you would back home.
- On check-out day, complete a walk-through to confirm you didn't forget any personal items. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property a final time and look for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos of the property to record its condition.
- Did your group have a terrific stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
