Tricks and tips to get the perfect vacation rental experience:

Sticking to your spending plan:

  • In the New Bern area, The earlier you can reserve a home, the better your selection will be. The best rental homes are reserved very early. Booking your vacation home up to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your rental.
  • Booking a rental in the Fall or Spring is a good way to save on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property management companies typically offer guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local New Bern area magazine upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides have coupons for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

How to pick the perfect vacation home:

  • First, have your group agree to the best dates and a budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Cute Lil' Condo on Intracoastal waterway with beach access and large pool has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is generally accessible on booking websites. Otherwise, contact the host before booking the home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds.
  • If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to search for a rental that allows animals. Ask for information on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • If there's a certain New Bern attraction you are enamored with, look for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

More tips for your stay:

  • Take a copy of the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Keep the property locked while you are out! Don't let thieves ruin your family vacation.
  • Upon check-in, make note of any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the host. Record all coorespondence.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Often, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can often help. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • On check-out day, take a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget anything. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did you have a terrific vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
