Tips and Tricks to get the optimal New Bern vacation home experience:
Money saving strategies:
- Summer is the most expensive season in coastal NC. To find the best value, try shifting your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer great temperatures, , and greatly reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a New Bern vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your group qualifies for a discount.
- Property managers usually offer renters an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Often, property management companies and vacation rental houses supply New Bern area visitor guides which often include special deals, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find New Bern visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
How to pick the perfect vacation home in the New Bern area:
- Choose a designated group leader, select your trip dates, and choose a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Big Kahuna - Oceanfront (As seen on HGTV Beach Hunters) has 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is almost always accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, email the property management company before you book the home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to establish what configuration is optimal for your vacation.
- If there's an individual New Bern destination you love, look for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.
- Do your family pets travel with you? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Extra fees or costs might be applied to your agreement.
More considerations:
- Be sure you get the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your . Put the host's information in your smartphone.
- Document any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be valuable if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents lots of issues.
- Respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would back home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected all personal items. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, take video of the property to record its condition.
- Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on good ratings to inspire more bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will be thankful you shared your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
