Tips and Tricks to get the best rental experience:

Getting the most from your rental budget:

  • The earlier you can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental homes are booked early. Reserving your vacation home six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
  • Summer is the most expensive season in the New Bern area. To get the best rental home within budget, we strongly suggest reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at the beach and popular New Bern attractions.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Property managers often offer customers an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Look for your local New Bern area magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guides have deals for nearby shops and restaurants.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Choose your vacation week and spending budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Dog-Friendly House w\/ Yard: Near Boat Launch! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available on booking pages. Otherwise, reach out to the property manager before you reserve the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches.
  • If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to search for a pet-friendly rental. Request specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some property owners charge additional pet fees.
  • Looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find your ideal rental home.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Add the owner's information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents quite a few concerns.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would back home.
  • Make a record of any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be useful if a dispute is filed.
  • Respect your neighbors. Frequently, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to confirm you didn't forget any personal items. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the property a final time and scan for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a excellent time? Most rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
