Strategies to get the very best vacation home experience:

Get the most from your budget:

  • Reserve your New Bern rental in the Spring or Fall to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities.
  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your family qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Property management companies typically offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local New Bern visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guide magazines have discounts for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Planning, selecting, and booking yourrental:

  • Select a group lead, choose your vacation dates, and select a budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Hooked Inn @ 8 1\/2 Marina Village with Boat Slip has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible online. If they are not listed, email the property management company before you reserve your home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • Looking for specific amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Add the owner's phone number to your smartphone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Note any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be beneficial if a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, television set or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent quite a few issues.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to confirm you didn't forget anything. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the manager is not available, remember to take video of the rental to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Property owners rely on great feedback to inspire future bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationers will will be grateful for your feedback find their best vacation rental. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
