Tricks and tips for getting the perfect vacation property experience:

Getting the most from your rental budget:

  • Summer time is high season in the New Bern area. Booking a rental in the Fall or Spring is our best tip for saving money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guides have offers and deals for local tours and attractions.

Filter your rental search:

  • Choose dates and budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Boaters Delight! Enjoy your vacation while you dock your boat in this new rental has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly accessible online. If they are not listed, reach out to the host before you reserve the property. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the owner about pets before booking.

More tips for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home.
  • Make a record of any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if there is a dispute.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents quite a few issues.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a terrific resource to find the best local scenic spots.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Lock your vacation home while you're away. Protect your property!
  • Double-check the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at check-out. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did you have a terrific time? Many rental websites make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property management company was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
